Selling your stuff on eBay

As I was telling you in my last post, my boyfriend and I are currently going through hard financial times as he just lost his job and I've just spent two months in a row not working. Fortunately enough, we aren't to the point that we can't afford food, or anything like that, but it definitely isn't easy as we need to buy a car in about two weeks.

So I had to make some decisions to find money and the hardest for me was to sell my stuff. I started with my collection of CDs. I know it probably sounds childish, but this was a very hard decision to make because the collection was dear to me. So this is how I sold my 300 CDs to MusicMagpie and I am now carrying on selling stuff on eBay.

I had never sold anything before on eBay, so this was completely new for me. I can't explain how happy I was when I realised the process was very easy. It has a lot of advantages, but I did find some bad points to it.

Bad points :
  • Fees. Although that sounds pretty fair to pay fees to be able to sell your stuff on their website, it's already annoying to know you're selling it for peanuts, but it is even more when a part of the money is going to eBay and Paypal.
  • Buyers who take ages to pay. Although most buyers are serious and pay almost straight away, some others are really not bothered about paying. And obviously, that freezes the whole process since you can dispatch the item until it's paid.
  • You can't always sell internationally. For me, as a French person living in the UK, I found it pretty annoying that I couldn't sell my stuff in the UK because my eBay account was set in France. You need to have a minimum of sales within your country to be able to start selling abroad. Which I found very inconvenient as a lot of my stuff is French and would interest French buyers only (DVDs for example).

Good points :
  • Easy. As I said, it's very easy to use and it's extremely convenient. You just fill in your advert, which you can do from any device (laptop, iPad, iPhone, anything that has internet basically) and you publish. Done! Altogether, it takes you about 5 minutes to post your ad, which is amazing.
  • Once your item is sold, it's very quick and easy to post. When the buyer has paid you, you get a notification telling you it's done, and you have access to the buyer's address. All you need to do is dispatch the item and confirm it's done.
  • Feedbacks. I love feedbacks, I like the fact that someone can tell whether you're a good seller or not. I personally base myself a lot on feedbacks when I buy something online. So that's why I find it important to be able to give and receive feedbacks. eBay let me do this, as a buyer and a seller, which is great as you can feedback someone who has never paid you or on the contrary, has been a great buyer.
  • Sort your stuff. Although it is a bit heartbreaking for some items, at the end of the day it allows you to sort your stuff out. I had some many things which I was never using and were just standing in a corner gathering dust, so it's quite nice to get rid of them. I got to sell some clothes for example, which made space in my wardrobe.

I've been a bad blogger

I've been a bad blogger over the past couple of weeks, I just got completely overwhelmed with my new job, a quick return journey to France, old flatmates coming back in the UK to visit and my boyfriend loosing his job.

So far, my new job is going pretty well and it has been a very intense week for us. It is a brand new Starbucks store so we had to get everything ready for the opening and also find some time to deal with all the promotion and sampling to attract new customers. But altogether, it was pretty fun and very interesting to see the process of opening a coffee store. Plus, I really enjoy learning everything and being a barista is a proper art, not just a job.

I also had to bring my car back in France, which wasn't easy because I love my car. But it's a French car, and I could no longer insure it in the UK. This was a bit of a last minute thing as well, so I had to book some time off work and fortunately enough, my manager accepted. The good thing is that it allowed me to spend some days with my mother and sister, which was very nice as I don't see them very often in the year. It's terrible how I miss them. But I'm finally in a good place, in which I feel ok with the fact that I chose to move to a different country. But anyway, it was a long drive but hopefully I won't have to do it again for some time.

Now. Let's go back to the subject.
I can't believe I let so much time since I last blogged. Life can be so hectic sometimes that I forgot how easy it is to get overwhelmed by things.
I feel like I don't have a proper routine yet and it gets difficult to balance work and personal life. It was especially hard when my boyfriend came back from work on monday and announced he got fired. Not the best time for this.
It wasn't his fault of course, and I supported him as soon as he told me. But at times when we're meant to buy a car and we had finally agreed on taking a dog, it definitely took us off-guard. Hopefully, things will sort themselves out and we can go back to our old quiet and happy life.

We are getting a dog...

YES!
Super awesome news, my boyfriend and I have officially decided to get a dog. After begging him for months, showing him some Youtube videos and hanging a Golden Retriever calendar on the fridge, he finally gave in and said it could be a good idea to welcome a little puppy in our home.

So I am now looking everywhere on the Internet to find some good breeders in the area. As you may have guessed already, I want a Golden Retriever. I've always wanted one (like, ALWAYS!) and I almost bought one two years ago but eventually didn't because that's when I moved to the UK and wasn't sure of where I was going to be staying. Looking back on it, I'm glad I didn't because it gave some time to settle down, find a place, and now I also have my boyfriend with me.

Although I am extremely happy and excited, I have to admit I am a bit scared at the same time. It is a big commitment I am willing to make, in the sense that a dog is a massive responsibility. But it also is a strong commitment to have as a couple, and this is what scares me a bit. I'm scared that it's going to make us fight or make us become estranged from each other.

So these are things worrying me, but at the same time I believe it will be a very good test for us. After all, I was scared before moving in with my boyfriend and it turned out to be an excellent thing for us as a couple. So now that my hormones are playing up, I feel that it might a good way to see if it will ever be possible for us to have a baby someday. Because let's be honest, having a puppy will be the closest experience to having a baby.

I will keep you updated on our progress to finding our perfect puppy.

OUI!

Going back to work after a 2 months break

(Scroll down to read the post in English)

¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨

Do you remember this article that I posted not a long time ago? Good news, I have a job! It took me a lot of patience but I did it, I am now working as a barista for Starbucks. I can't really say that it's my dream job, but for now it's alright, it's good enough to pay my bills. All the more since it's way more complicated than it seems... But anyway. Here I am today, going back to work after spending two months sitting at home. One might as well say that it was a bit of a shock.

I've just finished my first week of training and the hardest was to make myself a new routine. Having said that, working hours for this job can vary a lot. You can start at 6am, or 2pm, it's never the same so it can be quite hard to organise a real routine, but it's manageable. I'm slowing starting to go back to my old habits and I can't say with words how good it feels. Being off-work is obviously quite nice in a way, but it gave way too much time to think. I actually over-think a lot, and it never ends on a positive thought for some reason. The worst for me was to feel useless. I was almost feeling guilty about having to stay at home while my boyfriend was leaving for work at 7am every morning. I almost got to the point where I was spending my days sitting on the sofa all day long, not knowing what to do anymore.

Which made me wonder if I was gonna end up in this situation again when the day I have to take a maternity leave will come. But then I read all these parenting blogs, written by brave mothers, and you really don't need to be Einstein to understand they don't have the time to get bored. Quite the opposite in fact. However, it makes me realise that going back to work after a maternity leave must be a thousand times harder, because you've literally just spent several months carrying a baby, giving birth to him/her and learn how to live with your baby during his/her first months. I am already expecting to be crying a lot when this day will come.

But whatever happens, when you spend a rather long period of time not working, you do get used to it very quickly. Even though I really appreciated the simple fact of being able to work again, I seriously struggled physically. I found it very hard to get back on track. I was complaining of being tired when I wasn't working, but I have to admit that today, I feel absolutely shattered. To the point that I find myself in bed at 8pm every evening since I started working again. Which is quite sad at 23 years old. But god it feels good to work. We may complain a lot about it, but a job brings so much on the personal plan. I just can't wait to see what life has in store for me on the professional plan.

I personally dream of working in Event planning, but it's far from won.

Ladies, what do you carry in your handbag?

(Scroll down to read the article in English)

Sait-on jamais...
Que trouve-t-on dans votre sac à main?

It is commonly thought that a woman's bag says a lot about her personality and it's probably quite true. Mine changes a lot, depending on my moods and the occasion I am wearing it for. But we all have a certain amount of things that we systematically carry in our handbag, under any circumstances. It's a bit like it is our own survival kit.
So let me invite you to discover what's in mine, even though it has nothing exceptional, and don't hesitate to drop a comment to tell me what is in your own handbag!

  • A purse : it contains all my important papers. One might as well say that I would get in real trouble if I were to loose it.
  • A pair of Ray-Ban : I am very faithful to my sunglasses, I've had them for years and I absolutely love them. I wouldn't change them for anything in the world, they are great quality and very comfortable.
  • Sweets : Most of the time, I only have a packet of chewing-gums for emergencies, but I also carry (more often than I should...) Love Hearts sweets. Just because I'm a bit greedy from time to time.
  • A small pocket mirror : I have used it once in my life only but I'm still keeping it. Just in case, you never know...
  • A pen : I think carrying a pen is essential for everyone. We all need one at some point in our everyday life and I am always happy to have one within reach.
  • My keys : House and car keys obviously.
  • Contraceptive pills : You probably don't need me to explain why I've got these in my handbag...
  • A lip balm : I have very dry lips, so I need to have one at hand all the time. I always go for Labello and Nivea lip balms, I like everything about it.
  • Earphones : I take the bus to go to work, so they are here to entertain me. I just plug them onto my iPhone, listen to music and temporarily forget about everything else.
  • A book : When I'm not listening to music, I read. At the moment, I am reading a book from Giovanna Fletcher, it's called "Billy And Me". I actually would like to recommend it, it's really good.

And what about you? What do you normally carry in your bag?

Recette : Rochers noix de coco

Recipe : Coconut Macaroons

(Scroll down to read the article in English)

My boyfriend is very greedy and he also have a very sweet tooth so he's always asking me to bake him something, which I always do happily. So I think that from now on, I will post more regularly some recipes I enjoy doing in my free time.
These coconut macaroons are awfully delicious and you can easily get addicted to it. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, they're a mush to anyone who likes coconut.

Ingredients for 20 macaroons :

- 125g of sugar
- 150g of coconut

  • Put the bowl over a pan of boiling water and let it cook until the sugar is dissolved. You should obtain a warm mixture that holds well together.
  • Cover a baking tray with baking paper.
  • Form the macaroons with a spoon and place them on the tray.
  • Place the tray in your freezer for 1h.
  • Bake them in the oven at 150°C until they start to become golden on the top.
  • Let them cool down before you start removing them from the baking paper.

L'adoption, en seriez-vous capable?

Adoption, could you do it?

(Scroll down to read the article in English)

**************

I got the idea of writing this post when I was watching « 16 And Pregnant » on TV. As the title clearly says, the program is about 16 years old girls who accidentally became pregnant and they follow them from the beginning of the pregnancy to their first months as mums. In most episodes, the father eventually leaves the mother, which doesn't prevent her from having the baby anyway. But there has been a few episodes where the father stayed and was a great source of support to the mother.

I have just watched an episode where it was actually the case and I was extremely moved by the relationship between these two teenagers. There wasn't a single moment when the couple doesn't help each other, and you can clearly see they both are quite mature. As soon as they were aware of the pregnancy, they realised they couldn't afford to give a comfortable life to their baby, therefore they started considering a prospective adoption.

If they both agreed it probably was the best option for them and the baby, it was obvious that they were both hurt by the idea of giving up on their child after the birth. Despite this, they still managed to stick to their decision and eventually found a nice couple for the adoption. At birth, I particularly admired the young mother's patience, but I was especially touched by the father. At the very second the baby was out, you see him literally dissolve into tears on his girlfriend, telling her that they can do it, they will be fine and things will get better with time. It was incredibly moving, especially when he stood back up and asked why his daughter was still in the room. That's when I realised how hard it was for him to be so close to his baby and yet, unable to touch her.

Eventually, the young couple asked to be the first ones to hold their daughter. I think this is when the mother fully realised what was going to happen, and I really felt for her when I saw her face falling apart when she was given her daughter. It was even worse when the father couldn't hold her more than a few seconds without crying. Then came the moment when the adoptive parents entered the room and the young couple held the baby out to them. When you see the joy in the adoptive mother's eyes (who was unfortunately infertile), you realise that all this is a blessing in disguise. We really feel for the young couple who is extremely hurt, but we're also happy to see the adoptive parents being in heaven while holding their new child.

Personally, I often thought about what I would do if I were to get accidentally pregnant and I have to admit that if it happened to me at 16, I probably would have opted for an abortion. Purely because I am absolutely sure at 10000% that I would have been totally unable to give birth to a baby and not keep it. The idea literally breaks my hearts and it's just inconceivable in my mind. But it is also why I find these two teenagers absolutely admirable, because there wasn't a single moment when they weren't thinking about what was best for their baby. Every single thing they have done was in order to ensure their child would have a happy and comfortable life, no matter how much pain they were about to go through. And really, I think this was something amazingly remarkable and I have a lot of respect for them for this reason.

24h au British Superbike en photos

24 hours in the British Superbike Championship

(Scroll down to read the article in English)

Last weekend, I had the chance to go in the north of England to attend the British Superbike Championship at Cadwell Park. Let's be clear right away, bike racing is not one of my passions at all, nor is this kind of championship in general. I've actually hated the Grand Prix for so many years because it ruined so many of my Sunday afternoons, so it's an understatement to say that I wasn't sure of what to expect about this weekend.
My boyfriend's cousin happens to be one of the riders racing at the British Superbike Championship and it was an important race for him so we went to show him some support, but not only as spectators.
You see, my boyfriend recently decided he wanted to be self-employed and work as a filmmaker. He specialises in weddings, events in general and in sports too. So this weekend was the perfect chance for him to get his hand in filming in an environment so particular but extremely pleasant because at the end of the day, you realise that they all are a very big family.
For my part, I was in charge of taking pictures for the team who wanted to renew their portfolio for press releases and website. I enjoyed every second of it, it was such a nice experience to take photos of those friends and colleagues working so closely together to improve the rider's performance. Therefore, I would like to invite you to see this for yourself through some of the pictures.

Ten things that makes you regret being single...

(Scroll down to read the post in English)

True story...

For his new job, my boyfriend will now have to go away occasionally for a few days. This weekend was actually the first time he was leaving to go in the field and at the same time, it was the first time I was left on my own at home for several days in a row. It would be a lie if I said I didn't miss him, quite the opposite in fact. But his absence did make me realise that being in a couple is fantastic on many aspects, but being single also had many advantages.

When you're single... :

  1. ...you can sleep like a starfish. Cuddles and kisses are all good but since I have been with the mister, I had to learn how to sleep curled up in the corner of the bed, dangerously close to the edge.
  2. ...you can sleep the full night because there is no one next to you snoring for hours.
  3. ...you don't worry about knowing where he might be and if he's ok. A bit like a mother would, it happened that I would really start worrying because I hadn't heard from him in a while although he was meant to be home already. In the same way, I think a lot of women are in a similar case, you always have this little voice that whispers in your ear "Maybe he's with another woman... What if he'd just met someone that he find a lot more attractive and interesting than you...?"
  4. ...your house is always clean. There is no screwdriver  left on the coffee table, or socks abandoned in the stairs, not even boxer shorts hiding in places that you weren't even aware of. And let's not mention the dishes...
  5. ...you can watch whatever you want on TV. When you're in a relationship, you loose the rights to touch the remote control because the boyfriend decided he was its master. Gone are the days when you could watch the latest Grey's Anatomy episode because from now on, the TV is constantly turned on Top Gear or used to play the brand new super cool Xbox game.
  6. ...your fridge empties 10 times slower. It's not new, a boy eats a lot. And let's not lie to ourselves, he's usually not the one who has to go shopping. (And he still complains because you got the wrong milk...)
  7. ...you don't have a mother-in-law who unexpectedly comes on Sunday evening for dinner and gives you one hour's notice.
  8. ...you can let yourself go at home. You don't have to worry about not being shaved, you appreciate a good strong cheese-on-toast without feeling the need to brush your teeth in the second, and you don't care about wearing an old pair of leggings or a bathing cap in the shower.
  9. ...you can wear your passion killer, but very comfy, onesie whenever you want.
  10. ...you never have the impression of being competing with an iPad, a games console or a computer. True story...

Recette : Muffins framboises rapides

Recipe : Express Raspberry Muffins
(Scroll down to read the post in English)

Last sunday, I was quietly spending the afternoon on the sofa when my boyfriend suddenly got a text from his mother at 5pm to inform us she was coming to ours for dinner. Massive panic, I ran to the fridge to see what I had in stock, and obviously it was empty except for some carrots and half a courgette.
Of course, it was sunday, therefore impossible for me to quickly go to the shop, so I didn't have any other choice but manage to cook something with what I had. Somehow, I did manage to make a nice dish of pasta with vegetables and I had to use my secret weapon for the dessert : Express raspberry muffins. They are very easy to make and don't require a lot of time, which makes it the perfect dessert for emergency. If you don't have raspberries, you can just add more chocolate chips, your muffins will be just as good.

For about 12 muffins :
  • 50g butter
  • 250g flour
  • 11g baking powder
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 100g sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1tbs olive oil
  • 1ts vanilla extract
  • 200mL milk
  • 175g raspberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 40g chocolate chips
Instructions :
  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C.
  2. Melt the butter in a pan and save for later.
  3. In a big bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. Then, add the sugar and mix with a fork. Make a well in the center.
  4. In a different bowl, briefly beat the egg (not too much, just enough to break the yolk and lightly mix it.)
  5. Add the melted butter, vanilla extract, olive oil and the milk. With a whisk, mix it together until it becomes a bit frothy.
  6. Gently pour the liquid mixture in the well in your dry ingredients. With a spatula and using regular moves, incorporate progressively the dry ingredients to obtain a smooth mixture.
  7. Cut the raspberries in half (or more if they are bigger). Add the chocolate chips and raspberries in the batter. Incorporate them with a spatula. Remember to be gentle with it, you don't want to crush the raspberries. Do not overmix either because your muffins will be too hard.
  8. For the cooking, I personally use moulds in silicone but I also add some paper cases because the raspberries will make your muffins very soft. That's why it's wiser to give it some extra support. Fill the cases up to 3/4 and bake for 15 to 20 minutes.
  9. Check it's thoroughly cooked by inserting a skewer or thin knife. It should come out clean.

Y a-t-il un bon age pour avoir un bébé?

Is there a good age to have your first baby ?

(To read the article in English, scroll down)

¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨

As I was saying recently, the dreams I have today are very different from the ones I used to have when I first moved in the UK. Even though I'm now ok with the idea of staying here for a few more years, I can't get the fact that I would like to build a family with my boyfriend out of my mind. I wouldn't do it immediately because our situation doesn't allow it, but if it did, I wonder if it would still be the right time anyway.

When I mentioned this to my boyfriend, he obviously panicked as any young man would do. Having said that, at almost 28 years old, you'd expect him to feel more comfortable about this topic. But then, he said something that really got me thinking : « You're 23, you shouldn't be thinking about having babies, but having a career... » That's when I realised the monstrosity he'd just said. Yes, I am still young and I still have millions things to live in my life. For instance, I plan to travel a lot and to evolve as much as possible on the professional side, but getting married and have a child is something I've always wanted. Since the Christmas day I received a baby toy who could pee, to be more exact. Now, I don't know if it was all the media coverage about the royal baby that brought this desire back to me, but it's definitely here. From my point of view, a career should never define us and I've always seen the fact of building a family as one of the most beautiful accomplishment in life. You can obviously be proud of your career but I personnally want to be proud of things that really matters, which in my case include my life with my future husband and children.

But is there really a good age to think about having your first child ? Is it that shocking I want this at 23? I personnally don't think so. This decision is such an important one to make that you need to take everything into account. Without forgetting they change from one person to another, depending on their situation. Today, I want to settle down. I don't want a complicated life, where I would choose my work over my personal life. I just want to enjoy the little things in life and experience them with my loved ones.

I think that people should go at their own pace and when you feel ready, then it probably means you're ready. Now, I may feel ready but my boyfriend is still miles away from it. And let's not be in denial, you need to do this as a couple and ensure both parts want it. It's good to have a baby but this is long-time commitment, and some people underestimate this. How many girls have I seen pregnant and ending up single mother because the father didn't want that. But on another hand, I have also seen couples who had everything to succeed and despite of this, happened to be unable to handle the situation properly. In my case, I don't want to force my boyfriend into this as long as he won't feel ready. I just hope that it won't take him a decade before he is.

What about you, do you think there is a good age to become a mother ? How old were you when you had your first baby ? Did you feel ready ?

Memory can make your life harder sometimes...

(To read the article in english, scroll down)

This happens to everyone, our memory can really fail us sometimes. Whether you have a good memory or not, we all have forgotten something one day that really annoyed us on the moment or ruined our day, if not week. You probably know what I'm talking about, those little things that don't seem very important but still manage to irritate us greatly.

  1. Turn the kettle on to make some tea, briefly leave the room to do something else while the water is boiling and forget completely about it. An hour later, you ask yourself where is the tea you would swear you made.
  2. Get up in the morning, turn the coffee machine on after you had breakfast, go in the bathroom to get dressed while the coffee is getting ready and forget to drink it before you leave for work. Spend the rest of the day in a bad mood and very sleepy.
  3. Forget that you put some laundry in the washing machine and leave your wet clothes to rot in it for a couple of days.
  4. Forget that you exceptionally accepted to start work 30minutes earlier than usual and realise you forgot when you're taking your time reading a magazine on the toilets.
  5. Forget to buy some toothpaste and have a dog's breath for the rest of the day.
  6. Forget that you couldn't be bothered to fill up your car the day before, your tank is almost empty and you're already late for work.
  7. Go to the shop to buy a very specific product for a recipe and come back with everything but this particular ingredient.
  8. Forget to take the rubbish out on the morning of collection and find yourself with a stinky mountain of waste the following week.
  9. Leave for work in the morning, foolishly leave your keys on the door and be all stressed out for the rest of the day after you realised they're not in your bag.
  10. This one is for girls only. After a long day, you're finally in bed with your man, and when things are starting to become intimate, you remember with much to your horror that you're not waxed...
But what about you? Has your day ever been ruined by forgetting something?

Dix bonnes raisons d'avoir un chien

Ten good reasons to have a dog

(Scroll down to read the article in english)

My beautiful dog, Ulysse.

¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨

Everyone that knows me also knows how much I love dogs. As far as I can remember, this has always been the case and this will always be the case. Now, I've been trying for some time to convince my boyfriend that it would a great idea to welcome a dog in our home, but he's really hard to persuade. If you are in the same situation, here are some selling point you could use :

  1. A dog is an excellent companion. Whether you're single or in a relationship, a dog is faithful to you whatever happens. It will bring you happiness, a bit like a baby would and if you love your dog, he will give a hundred-fold return of your love.

  2. A dog needs to go for a walk for at least an hour a day and this is not negotiable. If it can be very annoying when you just got back from work, because going out again is the last thing you want to do, you need to see the bright side : not only this is very good exercise for your dog, but it is also very good for you. No more remorse about not going to the gym the past week because you were too tired...

  3. Adopting a dog is also about doing a good deed. If you want to rescue a dog with the help of an association, like RSCPA, you will give a dog a chance to be saved by providing him a safe and loving environment he didn't have before. But if you'd rather get a young puppy, there is nothing wrong about it as you're taking under your wings a fragile small being who will need lots of love too.

  4. Having a dog also gives you a good excuse to go for a walk without looking too ridiculous. Very often, I ended up home alone for a few days, wishing I could go out and enjoy some sun. But every time I go and walk by myself, I feel absolutely stupid when I pass all those couples holding hands and giving me funny looks. Plus, if you're single, you would be surprised by the amount of people who will come to you and say how beautiful your doggy is. So if you're lucky enough, your prospective future-mister could be one of them.

  5. A dog gives you a sense of responsibility. Even if you feel sad, depressed or tired, you have to take care of your dog. You need to feed him, take him out, etc, play with him, etc... Which, at the end of the day, is a very good thing because you are responsible for someone else and it's a constant source of motivation to get out of bed in the morning. All the more since a dog makes you feel more confident in yourself. It doesn't matter how you feel, the love that your dog will have for you is limitless. Not only he becomes your best-friend, but he gives you responsibilities and indirectly, he makes you realise that you are totally capable of properly taking care of him. By making him happy, you make yourself happy.

  6. When your boyfriend isn't being very cuddly, I can promise you that your dog will be more than happy to take his place and receive the kisses, cuddles and loving words on his behalf !

  7. If you have children, a Golden Retriever is the perfect dog to have because it will always be extremely gentle with them. This kind of dog loves playing, which will make your children very happy. However, you have to make sure that your children understand the dog isn't a toy !

  8. After leaving the house, whether it was to go shopping or for work, a dog will always welcome you with joy and happiness. You will never feel more appreciated than at this moment when he's jumping around you a thousand times with a big open mouth that makes him look like he's smiling.

  9. Dogs are also good for your health. Researches have proved that stroking your dog decrease your heart rate and blood pressure. In addition to this, the fact that a dog is covered with germs make your immune system a lot stronger and resistant. It also seems that children growing up with dogs are less likely to get allergies in their lifetime.

  10. Under any circumstances, even under threat, your dog will never tell your secrets, which makes him the best confidant. Your dog will also see you naked hundreds of times and will never judge you.

How to make friends while living abroad?

(Scroll down to read the post in english)

Là on parle sérieusement.

Living abroad is good. But living abroad AND make friends is much better. Having said that, we can't say it's an easy thing to do and this happens for several reasons.
Firstly because you are normally at the age where most people already have a solid group of friends, and when you arrive in a country, people always see you as "the Frenchy". I don't know why, but people become very curious when they meet you and want to know everything about you but don't want you to know anything about them, so it all stops there.

Even if you end up dating a local guy, people will still see you as such because you've now become "the French girlfriend". Whether it is his friends or complete strangers. It's a bit like your nationality defines you entirely et says everything about you and your personality. I thought for a long time that there wasn't any solution to solve this situation. For example, I've been with my boyfriend for a year and a half, and despite all this time, his friends still act with me like I was a strange and intimidating creature from a distant land, called France.

So what can we do to change this? The answer is simple : make your own friends and keep persisting until they see you as a friend too. Which brings us back to our main topic. How to make friends while living abroad. You have many options for this.

  • LANGUAGE COURSES

In the case where your language skills are limited, you always have the option to take a language course on the spot. There are loads of schools for this and they are normally cheap. These classes are usually really nice to attend and you meet many friendly people who are in the same situation than you. The only drawback is that the only people you can meet in those places are obviously foreigners too. Although it's reassuring to find people going through the same things than you, you came in this country for a reason and it's to meet the locals. All the more since it helps you a lot to improve your language skills.

  • PUBS !

Now that's what I'm talking about. In the UK, pubs are a great place to meet people because they go there to chill out and have fun. So they normally are easy to talk to and happy to meet new faces. Especially when you come from another country because they all get very curious about you and love trying to speak your native language. That's why it's easy to start long conversations and if you get-on well, you can always try to mention the possibility to go for a drink one day.

  • WORK

If you find a job, and god knows it's not an easy thing to do like I was recently telling you, a work place is the perfect place to make friends. You are going to spend so much time working with these people that it will give you the opportunity to really know them and in the same way, they will start to see you as a true colleague and not only like the foreigner who just arrived in their country. It would obviously be an advantage if your colleagues were young, or the same age than you, so it's easier to find common interests and get to know them outside of work.

  • FLATMATES

Here is something that happened to be an amazing experience for me, but I've also been extremely lucky when I found my first collocation in Reading. I knew I wanted to meet local people, so my goal was to find British flatmates. Ironically enough, I ended up living with a Spanish girl, a Canadian guy, a French guy and I still managed to get one British in the lot. In the end, I've spent some of the best moments of my life with these four people. We didn't know each other at all, and 10 months later we had become very close friends. So this is definitely something you can try, but don't forget that sharing accommodation can also be a rough experience if you are with the wrong people. A friend of mine lived with two girls from England who never talked to her, didn't clean anything in the house and were spending their time smoking in every room. So you have to make sure to meet up with these prospective flatmates before making the big plunge, and you never know, it could be that you just met people who will become precious friends!
